Strategy Letter I: Ben & Jerry's vs Amazon
When building a company, one of the earliest decisions you must make is what type of company will you be. Will you grow slowly, organically and profitably? Or will you choose fast growth by raising lots of capital? The model you choose will define your values, impact how you make company decisions and guide the way your organization builds. Back in 2000, Joel Spolsky shared a strategy letter, which is relevant today, that shares the differences in these models by comparing Ben & Jerry's (slow, organically grown) and Amazon (fast growth, lots of capital). His breakdown provides insight on how companies should think of their own models and the pitfalls associated with each.
